UCHITEL E
fim Yulievich (1913-1988, Leningrad), documentary film director, script writer, cameraman, People’s Artist of the USSR (1976). After graduating as a cameraman from the Leningrad Institute of Motion-Picture Engineers in 1935 he worked at the Leningrad Newsreel Studio. Shot over 50 films and events for newsreels and special news shows. Worked as a military cameraman during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45.

UDELNAYA
, an area in the north part of St. Petersburg; in the north, it adjoins Ozerki, in the east - Sosnovka forest park, in the east - Kolomyagi, in the south-west - Udelny Park. In the early 18th century, the territory belonged to the treasury, in the late 18th century, it passed to Udelov Department (Department of Lots) (hence the name).

UDELNY PARK
is located between Engelsa Avenue, Udelny Avenue, Bogatyrsky Avenue, Ispytateley Avenue, Kolomyazhsky Avenue and Akkuratova Street. From the 1930s until the beginning of the 1990s, it was called the Chelyuskintsev Memorial Park. The total area of the park is 153.4 hectares. It was laid out in 1832 as a forest dacha of Udelny Agricultural College. It became a park in 1875.

oris Sergeevich (1922, Leningrad - 1991, Leningrad), painter and graphic artist, full member (1978) and president (from 1983) of Academy of Arts of the USSR, People's Artist of the USSR (1982). He studied in the Academy of Arts (1945-51) under Viktor Oreshnikov and Andrey Mylnikov, and his post-graduate course in the Academy of Arts (1951-54) he studied under Alexander Gerasimov.

Ugolnaya Harbour
UGOLNAYA HARBOUR (Coal Harbour)
is an artificial harbour located in the south-eastern St. Petersburg. It was constructed in the area of a small arm of Neva Bay for unloading of vessels shipping coal at the turn of the 20th century. The name appeared in the 1910s after the construction of New Pier separating the Harbour from the Gulf of Finland. Ugolnaya Harbour is a rectangular basin, 2 km long, 0.7 km wide and up to 5 meters deep.

UGRYUMOV G
rigory Ivanovich (1764 - 1823, St. Petersburg), painter and teacher. He studied at the Academy of Arts in 1770-85, and taught painting at the same institution from 1791 onwards. In 1797 he was admitted to the Academy as a member, to be promoted to the post of professor in 1800. In 1820 he was appointed Rector of Painting at the Academy. His students included A.E. Egorov, V.K. Shebuev and O.A. Kiprensky.

Uhlan Life-Guards Regiment
UHLAN LIFE GUARDS REGIMENT
, cavalry guards regiment. Its origin goes back to the Odessa Hussar Regiment, formed in 1803, which served the basis of the Uhlan Regiment of His Highness which was formed the same year. In 1809 the regiment was divided into the Uhlan Life Guards Regiment and the Dragoon Life Guards Regiment. From 1894 after the designation by Empress Alexandra Fedorovna as its patron, it was named Uhlan Life Guards Empress Alexandra Fedorovna's Regiment.

UKHTOMSKY A
lexis Alexeevich (1875-1942), physiologist, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1935). He graduated from Moscow Ecclesiastical Academy in 1898. In 1902, he moved to St. Petersburg, where he graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1906; he remained in the university to work there and took on the Chair of Human and Animal Physiology in 1922.

The formation of the Ukrainian community in St. Petersburg began in the 19th century. In 1869 there were approximately 500 Ukrainians living in the city, in 1900 - 10,600, in 1910 - 17,000, the majority were labourers.

ULANOVA G
alina Sergeevna (1910, St. Petersburg - 1998), dancer, pedagogue, Hero of Socialist Labor (1974, 1980), People"s Artist of the USSR (1951). Graduating from the Leningrad Choreographic School under A.Y. Vaganova, she was a soloist at the Kirov Opera and Ballet Theatre from 1928 until 1941. She was the first to play the role of Maria in The Fountain of Bakhchisaray (1934, ballet master R.V. Zakharov) and Juliet (1940, ballet master L.M. Lavrovsky).

Ulyanka
ULYANKA
, an area to the south-west of St. Petersburg; in the north-east, it borders on Dachnoe (divided from it with Alexandrino forest park); in the west, it is confined with Marshal Zhukov Avenue, in the south - with Narodnogo Opolcheniya Avenue. In the 17th century, there was Ulyalya Village, where the toponym Ulyanka originates from. In the 19th century, Ulyanka was a regular country place.

UNDERGROUND WATERS
. St. Petersburg is located in the northwestern part of Moskovsky artesian basin. The water content of the crystalline rocks relate to the residuum and zones where they meet. Their practical utilisation ends in the North of the Karelian Isthmus. The sedimentary cover ground waters are diverse. The primordial ones refer to the Gdov sands of the early Proterozoic: the high-pressure sweet waters around Sestroretsk are used for water supply.
