YABLOCHKOV P
avel Nikolaevich (1847-1894), electrical engineer. In St. Petersburg, he left the Nikolaevskoe Engineering School in 1866 and Technical Galvanic School in 1869. He wrote his major works on electric lighting, electrical engineering, and chemical sources of electric currents.

Yablonovka
YABLONOVKA
, an area close to Ladozhskaya metro station, on the right bank of the Okkervil River. Since 1817, it was known as Bolshaya Yablonka village (since 1831 - Bolshaya Yablonovka). Malaya Yablonovka village was located about 1 km up-stream. Since the early 20th century, there has been Viktoria Oil and Roofing Felt Factory.

YACHT CLUBS
. Nevsky Flot (Nevskaya Flotiliya) was the first yacht club in Russia. It was founded by order of tsar Peter the Great on 12.4.1718 and had its own flag. It was given 141 small ships "to entertain people" in perpetual tenure. After the death of Peter the Great the yacht club’s activities ceased. In 1846 the first Regulations and the flag of the Imperial St. Petersburg Yacht Club were adopted. The Club had 19 members and 5 sailing yachts, only noblemen were admitted.

YAKOBSON L
eonid Veniaminovich (1904, St. Petersburg - 1975), dancer, choreographer, Honoured Worker of Arts of Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (1957). After graduating from the Leningrad Drama School, where he studied under V.I. Ponomarev, he started performing as an actor in 1926-33.

Yakornaya Square
YAKORNAYA SQUARE
in Kronstadt, the central square of the town, limited by the ravine of Petrovsky Dock, the wall of the Admiralty and Obvodny Canal. The square appeared in 1754 as the place for the storage of anchors and anchor chains (hence the name, meaning anchor square; in November 1918 the square was renamed as Revolyutsii Square, though the name did not become common).

YAKOVLEV A
lexander Evgenievich (1887 - 1938, St. Petersburg), painter and graphic artist. He studied at the Academy of Arts from 1905 to 1913, with D.N. Kardovsky as his tutor from 1907. From 1914 to 1915 he was a retainer of the Academy of Arts in Italy. Yakovlev was one of the representatives of St. Petersburg neo-classicism.

YAKOVLEV (Sobakin)
Savva Yakovlevich (1712-1784), manufacturer. A representative of petty bourgeoisie from Ostashkov, he owned dozens of butcher shops and co-owned a wine-house in St. Petersburg. He became the owner of Yaroslavskaya Manufactory in the 1760-70s and 22 industrial enterprises in the Urals. It was Yakovlev's funds that were used to build the Holy Assumption Church on Sennaya Square.

YAKUBOVICH P
eter Filippovich (1860-1911, St. Petersburg), poet, writer, participant of People"s Will movement of the 1880s. He graduated from Faculty of History and Philology of Petersburg University (1882). From 1878 he published verses in Delo, Otechestvennye Zapiski, Slovo, and other magazines. After graduating from university he entered Petersburg Department of People"s Will Party, and was one of the organizers of the Young People"s Will Party, its leader and ideologist.

Yakubovicha Street
YAKUBOVICHA STREET
, called Novo-Isaakievskaya Street until 1923, after St. Isaac's Cathedral, running between Isaakievskaya Square and Truda Square. The street was named after Decembrist A.I. Yakubovich (1792-1845). The street was laid on the site of Masterskoy Canal, which existed here in the 18th century as a branch of Admiralteysky Canal and was filled-in in 1797-98. In 1782-89 house No. 12 was built (see Central Post Office).

YANSON Y
uly Eduardovich (1835-1893, St. Petersburg), statistician and economist, corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences from 1892. He graduated from Kiev University with a major in history and philology in 1855. Lived in St. Petersburg from 1864, he taught statistics and political economy at the Institute of Railway Engineers. He was a teacher at Petersburg University from 1865 promoted to professor in 1873 and dean of the law faculty in 1876-88.

oann Leontevich (1826-1910, St. Petersburg), religious and public figure, preacher, Doctor of Theology (1899). Graduated from St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1849. In 1851, he was ordained into the priesthood and assigned as a priest to an Orthodox Church in Wiesbaden (Germany).

YARD KEEPERS
, until the mid-18th century, holders of hostelries, afterwards, they were house workers. In the 18th century the yard keeper’s duty was to clean the yard and the territories adjacent to the house. Yard-keepers served as watchmen as well. As a rule, yard-keepers were of peasant origin; they came to St. Petersburg for money and stayed in the city.

Yaremich S.P. (1869-1938), artist, art historian
YAREMICH S
tepan Petrovich (1869-1938, Leningrad), art historian, artist, collector. Studied in a real school in Kiev. Moved to St. Petersburg in 1899. Yaremich was a member of the World of Art Association and Old St. Petersburg Society. In 1904-08, he lived and worked as an artist in Paris. In 1928 he was appointed a curator of the State Hermitage.

YAROSHENKO N
ikolay Alexandrovich (1846-1898), painter. Lived in St. Petersburg from the mid-1850s. He graduated from the First Cadet Corps in 1863, the Mikhaylovsky Artillery School in 1865, and the Mikhaylovsky Artillery Academy in 1870. After graduating, he served at the Arsenal, retiring in 1892 with the rank of major-general. From 1867 to 1874, he studied art as an irregular student of the Academy of Arts and under I.N. Kramskoy.

YATSEVICH A
ndrey Grigorievich (1887, St. Petersburg - 1942, Leningrad) art historian, regional ethnographer, specialist in the works by Pushkin. Yatsevich graduated from the Faculty of Law of St. Petersburg University in 1905. He graduated from the Faculty of Art History of the St. Petersburg Archaeological Institute in 1912. Yatsevich studied Italian Renaissance culture and St. Petersburg culture and history.
