SHCHEDRIN Apollon Feodosievich (1796-1847), architect, representative of late Neoclassicism. The son of F.F. Shchedrin. In 1818, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts, held a lecturing position there (from 1827); (in 1833 was conferred the title of professor, in 1837 that of associate academy member). Architect of the Imperial Philanthropic Society Boarding Home for Poor Children (from 1821), Imperial Public Library (from 1826), Ministry of People's Education (from 1833), St. Petersburg University (1827-41) and academic institutions of the Holy Synod (from 1837), military-academic institutions (from the late 1830s). Shchedrin's most famous work is the rebuilding of the Twelve Collegia to accommodate university facilities. In the 1830-40s he rebuilt the Larinskaya Gymnasium (15 Sixth Line of Vasilievsky Island), Third Gymnasium (23 Gagarinskaya Street), 1st Cadet Corps (see Cadet Corps), extended the building of the Patriotov Institute (3 Tenth Line of Vasilievsky Island). He also authored the projects of the Theological Seminary and the House of Mercy (20 Rastannaya Street), which are viewed as examples of the officially accepted, formal Empire style. He lived at the 4 Ninth Line of the Vasilievsky Island. Buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery.
