ABRAMOV F
edor Alexanderovich (1920-1983, Leningrad), writer, essayist. He lived in Leningrad from 1938. He participated in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, was heavily wounded in the battle for Leningrad. He graduated from Philological Faculty of Leningrad State University (1948), where he taught in 1953-60, and was a Head of the Modern Literature Department in 1956-60.

AGNIVTSEV N
ikolay Yakovlevich (1888-1932) was a poet, dramatist. He entered the Faculty of History and Philology of Petersburg University in 1906 but failed to graduate. He had publications in Peterburgskaya Gazeta, Birzhevye Vedomosti, Golos Zemli, in the journals Pyatak, Solntse Rossii, Satirikon and Novy Satirikon, Stolitsa i Usadba. He performed in theatres-cabarets and at the literary-artistic restaurant Vienna.

AKHMATOVA A
nna Andreevna (nee Gorenko) (1889-1966), poet, Honorary Doctor of Oxford University (1965). She spent her childhood (until 1905) in Tsarskoe Selo (the corner of Shirokaya Street and Bezymyanny Lane, the house and the lane have not been preserved, today Vokzalnaya Square), studied at Mariinskaya School (17 Leontievskaya Street, memorial plaque), at Kiev High Women’s Courses (1908-10).

eonid Nikolaevich (1871-1919, Navol's house, near Mustamyaka, Finland; today Gorkovskoe Village of Leningrad Region), writer, dramatist. In 1891 he entered Faculty of Law of Petersburg University (dismissed for non-payment), in 1893 transferred to Faculty of Law of Moscow University (graduated in 1897). Andreev's first collection of stories was published by M. Gorky in Petersburg, in Znanie publishing house in 1901.

ANNENSKY I
nnokenty Fedorovich (1856-1909, St. Petersburg), poet, playwright, translator, critic, and teacher promoted to Actual Civil Counsellor in 1896. He graduated from the department of history and philosophy of Petersburg University with a major in literature in 1879.

APUKHTIN A
lexey Nikolaevich (1840-1893, St. Petersburg), poet, prose writer. He graduated from The Law School (1859, schoolmate of P.I. Tchaikovsky), then he served in the Ministry of Justice (until 1862). He started writing in the 1850s, and became wide known after the publication of Verses collection (1886), which included 85 works (republished in 1891 and 1893).

eonid Lvovich (1939, Leningrad - 1970), poet. He graduated from the Herzen State Pedagogical University (1963). He worked as a teacher of literature at the evening school. In the early 1960s he was closely associated with I.A. Brodsky, A.L. Khvostenko, E.G. Mikhnov-Voitenko and other poets and artists, who was not officially recognized.

AVERCHENKO A
rkady Timofeevich (1881-1925), writer, playwright, theatre critic. He started writing in 1903. From 1907 he lived in St. Petersburg: worked for Svobodnaya mysl newspaper and Strekoza magazine. In 1908 he headed Satyrikon journal (from 1913 Novy Satyrikon), where he published various humorous stories, feuilletons, theatrical and artistic reviews under different pen-names.

vgeny Abramovich (1800-1844), poet. In 1812-16 he was educated in the Page Corps. In 1816 he was expelled for misbehaviour (a theft) without the right to serve and went to Smolenskaya Province. In 1818 he returned to St. Petersburg, in 1819 was enlisted as a common soldier in the Yegersky Life Guards Regiment, in 1820 he was made a non-commissioned officer, transferred to Neishlotsky Infantry Regiment, located in Finland.

van Semenovich (1732, St. Petersburg [?] - 1768) poet, historian, translator. He studied at the Alexander Nevsky Theological Seminary from 1744; in 1748 he was accepted into the Academic Institute, he was expelled in 1751 for unbecoming behavior.

BATYUSHKOV K
onstantin Nikolaevich (1787-1855), poet, lieutenant colonel (1818). In 1797-1807 he permanently lived in St. Petersburg: was brought up in private boarding schools, served in the Ministry of People's Education (1802-07). Consequently, visited St. Petersburg briefly. He participated in the Napoleonic Wars (1807, 1813-14), in the Russian-Sweden War (1808-09).

BELINSKY V
issarion Grigorievich (1811-1848, St. Petersburg), critic, publicist. Studied at the Department of Philology of Moscow University (was expelled in 1832). Resided in St. Petersburg from 1839. Contributed to Literaturniye pribavlenia k Russkomu Invalidu newspaper, afterwards was the principal critic of the Otechestveniye Zapiski journal until 1846.

ndrey (real name and family name Boris Nikolaevich Bugaev) (1880-1934), writer. He graduated from the Natural Sciences Department of Physics and Mathematics Faculty of Moscow University (1903). He was published for the first time in 1901, and was an adherent of the so-called young symbolists. From 1905 he regularly visited St. Petersburg and Tsarskoe Selo; visited Ivanov's Wednesdays, Merezhkovsky's Salon. He was published in The World of Art, New Way and other journals.

BELYAEV A
lexander Romanovich (1884-1942, Pushkin Leningrad Region), writer. He studied in Smolensky Holy Seminary and in Demidov Law Lyceum in Yaroslavl. From 1915 he was seriously ill. After changing many professions he devoted himself to writing by the end 1920s. He lived in Leningrad and in Tsarskoe Selo (Pushkin) in the 1930s. He worked in the Leningrad and Pushkin Periodical and at Leningrad Radio.
