ADMIRALTEISKY DISTRICT
, (Admiralty) an administrative territorial unit of St. Petersburg (Its territory administration is located at 10 Izmailovsky Avenue), is one of the central districts of the city. It was formed in 1994 by merging Leninsky and Oktyabrsky districts. It was named after the former Admiralty Police Department and the Main Admiralty.

ANNENSCHULE
, a school attached to St. Anna's Lutheran Church, situated at 8a Kirochnaya Street. Y. I. Bruce, Peter the Great’s associate, made a decision in 1722 to provide regular training to children in reading and writing in German language with a separate school building later constructed. The school was opened on 3 January 1736 with pastor L. Shattner as the first teacher and director.

, football players. Peter Timofeevich Dementyev (nicknamed Peka) (1913, St. Petersburg - 1998), Merited Master of Sports (1946), right midfielder. From 1926 he played for the team of Khalturin Factory, in 1932-39 and 1949-52 - for Dinamo (Leningrad), from 1941 - for Zenit (Leningrad), in 1944-46 - for Krylya Sovetov (Moscow), in 1947-48 - for Dinamo (Kiev).

DEMIDOV GARDEN
is situated at Ofitserskaya (today Dekabristov) Street; between Pisareva Street and Moika River Embankment. In the early 18th century the lot belonged to Baron P.P. Shafirov, an associate of Peter the Great, in the second half of the 18th century it passed to L.A. Naryshkin. The so-called Banquettes in Naryshkin's Garden were opened on the territory of the garden in 1793, which had the character of an entertainment establishment, the first in St. Petersburg.

EICHENBAUM B
oris Mikhailovich (1886-1959, Leningrad), a literary historian, Ph.D. (philology) in 1918. Living in St. Petersburg from 1905, he studied at the Army Medical Academy and P. F. Lesgaft's Free Higher School and graduated from Petersburg University with a major in history and philology in 1914. He was a teacher at the university in 1914-48, promoted to Professor in 1918.

GYMNASIA
, institutions of intermediate general education. In pre-revolutionary Russia they were mainly established with the purpose of training pupils for university and service in state institutions. The Academic Gymnasium was the first to be opened in St. Petersburg (1726-1805). The four-year Main Gymnasium for people of all classes was opened according to the Regulations for Educational Institutions in 1804. In 1805 in was located at 27/12 Bolshaya Meshchanskaya Street.

ladimir Leontyevich (1869, St. Petersburg - 1945), botanist and geographer, Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1920), Vice-President (1930-36) and President (1936-45) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor (1943). Graduated from the University of St. Petersburg in 1894, where he began teaching four years later while also teaching at P.F. Lesgaft's courses (1899-1909) and M. Lokhvitskaya-Skaron's courses (from 1906).

, State, St. Petersburg (SPSAFC) (35 Dekabristov Street) was founded by P.F. Lesgaft in 1896 as the Higher Courses for Physical Education Directors. In 1905-07 it was named the Free High School and in 1910 it was renamed the Higher Courses. They were established by N.V. Dmitriev at the St. Petersburg Biological Laboratory.

LESGAFT P
eter Frantsevich (St. Petersburg, 1837-1909), anatomist and teacher. Graduated from the Medical Surgical Academy in 1861. In 1868, he became a professor at Kazan University. In 1871, started teaching at the Medical Surgical Academy. In 1874-86, his primary interest was in the organisation of physical training and education in military educational institutions.

'S COURSES, also named the Training Courses for Governesses and Teachers of Physical Education, teacher's training institution for women founded in 1896 on the initiative of P. F. Lesgaft by the Society for the Encouragement of Physical Education. They were initially introduced as the Temporary Two-Year Training Courses for Teachers of Physical Exercises and Sports.

is a higher military educational institution. It prepares officers specialising in physical education and sport. It derives its history from the Petrograd Courses of Physical Training Instructors, created in 1918, and the Major Military Gymnastic Fencing School, which were transformed into the Military Faculty of the State Central Physical Education Institute in 1932.

ikolay Alexandrovich (1854-1946), revolutionary-narodnik, writer, scientist, author of memoirs, honorary member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1932). He studied at the Second Moscow High School, which he left in 1874 without graduating. He was a member of the Moscow group of the Chaykovsky Circle, participant of the so called Walking among the People movement.

eon (Levon) Abgarovich (1882-1958), physiologist, member (1935) and vice-president (1942-46) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, member of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic (1943), member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR (1944), Hero of Socialist Labour (1945), colonel general of the medical service (1944). The brother of I.A. Orbeli. He came to St. Petersburg in 1899.
