SPASSKY ISLAND, translated as Saviour Island, situated in the centre of St. Petersburg between the Fontanka River, Moika River, Griboedova Canal, and Kryukov Canal. It is over 230 hectares in area. It was a part of Pervushin Island that also included Kolomensky Island, Pokrovsky Island, and Kazansky Island until the early 18th century with the Krivusha River (today, Griboedova Canal) flowing across. Another name was Fontanny Island. The present-day name appeared in the 18th century in honour of Christ the Saviour Church on Sennaya Square (see Holy Assumption Church). The island was included in Spasskaya Chast until 1917.
