SUZOR Pavel Yulievich (1844 - 1919, Petrograd), architect, associate academy member of architecture (1892). Graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Arts (1866). From 1873, worked at the City Council, from 1883 lectured at the Institute of Civil Engineering. He was a master of matured Eclecticism and Art Nouveau. Over 80 buildings of his design can be seen at present (apartment houses, baths, orphanages, hospitals, academic and bank buildings, churches and industrial production facilities). From the 1870s, he continuously employed new techniques of structural organization for apartment houses, broad windows, multi-storied bay windows, corner-towers. These enlarged elements of a three-dimensional composition, accentuating the silhouette of streets and blocks, are skilfully integrated into А.М. Ushakov's house (54 Nevsky Prospect, 1882-83), Е.S. Egorov's house (pres. 40 Nekrasova Street, 1883-84), V.A. Ratkov-Rozhnov's house (pres. 71 Griboedov Canal Embankment, 1886-88), P.T. Badaev's house (49 Bolshoy Avenue of Petrogradskaya Side, 1902-03). Suzor’s defined the appearance of a newly routed Pushkinskaya Street (1874-79). Works performed in the late 19th century combine rational planning and the lavishness of the eclectic adornment of facades. In the houses of Y.V. Ratkov-Rozhnov and A.V. Ratkov-Rozhnov (13-15 Pestelya Street, 32-34 Kirochnaya Street, 1898-1900) for the first time we see the court and garden areas opened on the street side with gigantic arches. Suzor paid special attention to the construction of baths, among his projects are the baths of M.S. Voronin (1 Fonarny Lane, 1870-71), of E.S. Egorov (11 Bolshoy Kazachy Lane, 1875-76), of E.F. Ovchinnikov (22 Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street, 1876-77), Belozerskie baths (present day 1 Kropotkina Street, 1882). The building of the Society of Mutual Credit is designed in the spirit of Neo-renaissance (present day 13 Griboedov Canal Embankment, 1888-90, sculptors D.I. Jensen, А.М. Opekushin). Syuzor's most significant creations are considered to be the building of the join-stock company Singer and Co. (28 Nevsky Prospect, 1902-04, sculptor А.G. Adamson, now Dom Knigi bookstore, where a metal frame was first applied. Initiator and chairman of the Russian Architects Congresses' Organizational Committees. Chairman of the Artists Architects Society (from 1903). One of the founders of the Museum of Old St. Petersburg, from 1907 located at his house (at present 21 Syezdovskaya Line). Also owned houses at 3 Volkhovsky Lane, 42 Kazanskaya Street among others. Buried at Smolenskoe Lutheran Cemetery.
