CHISTOVICH Illarion Alexeevich (1828 --1893, St. Petersburg), theologian, corresponding member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1874). Upon graduating from St. Petersburg Theological Academy (1851), taught courses on Russian church and civil history (1851-53), psychology and history of philosophy (1853--73), and lectured on philosophy in the School of Jurisprudence (1866-82). In 1883, he was elected member of the Council of Ministers for Public Education. Authored over 30 works on the history of Russian church, theological education, philosophy and psychology; among them, Theophan Prokopovich and His Time (1868), Studies of Western Russian Church History (parts 1-2, 1882-84), The History of Russian Translations of the Bible (1899; 2nd edition - 1997); his The History of St. Petersburg Theological Academy (1857) was awarded the Demidov Prize of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Lived at 34 Liteiny Avenue. Buried at Nikolskoe Cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Lavra.
