Pavlovsky as a Scientific Land-Reclamation Institute for solving water-work construction issues. It was reorganised in 1931 and joined by a number of research organisations, the institute was renamed the Research Institute of Hydraulic Engineering, it achieved All-Union status in 1940. It was named after B. E. Vedeneev, a member of the academy, in 1946. It received its present-day name in 1992. The institute provides research and development for power and hydraulic engineering.
