Propp V.Y. (1895-1970), literature historian

PROPP Vladimir Yakovlevich (1895-1970), literary historian and folklore scholar awarded a Ph.D. (philology) in 1939. He graduated from Petrograd University with a major in history and philology in 1918. He taught in various institutes, including at Leningrad State University where he worked from 1932, promoted to professor in 1938 and then head for the chair of the history of Russian literature in 1963-64. Among his major works are the world-famous Morphology of the Folk Tale of 1928, Historical Roots of the Magic Tale of 1946, Russian Heroic Epic of 1955, Russian Agrarian Festivals, and Problems of Amusement and Laughter published in 1976. He was the founder of an academic school. He lived at 20 Marata Street until 1960 and 197 Moskovsky Avenue from 1960. Buried at Severnoe Cemetery.
