WURTTEMBERG ALEXANDER, VON (Alexander Friedrich Karl) (1771-1833), Prince, Russian state and military figure, Cavalry General (1800). Brother of Empress Maria Fedorovna (wife of Emperor Pavel I). He comes from the land-owning Wurttemberg family (South Germany). From 1800, he served in Russia. He participated in the Patriotic War of 1812 and the campaigns of 1813-14 (he conducted the Danzig Siege, pulling together detachments to fight for St. Petersburg irregular detachments. From 1822, he headed the Main Office of Communications; from 1826, he was also a member of the State Council. He reorganized the Communication Engineers Corps, introduced a new program in the Institute Corps, and founded the Civil Engineers' School in St. Petersburg. Under his supervision, the St. Petersburg — Moscow and the St. Petersburg — Kovno throughways were constructed. He also supervised reconstruction of the Mariinskaya, Tikhvinskaya, Vyshnevolotskaya, Berezinskaya and Oginskaya water systems, and the construction of floodgates at the mouth of the Ladozhsky Canal. The canal connecting Sukhona and Sheksna was named after him. In 1832, he retired and left Russia. He lived in the house of the Communications Office at 115 Fontanka River Embankment.
