PUSHKINSKY DISTRICT, an administrative and territorial unit of St. Petersburg (with the territorial administration situated in the town of Pushkin, at 24 Oktyabrsky Boulevard). The name comes from the town of Pushkin which is the center of the district. Pushkinsky District was formed in 1936 as Detskoselsky District (present-day name was given in 1937) and is located in the southern part of St. Petersburg. In the east it borders on the Kolpinsky District, in the north - with Frunzensky District and Moskovsky District, in the west - with Lomonosovsky District of Leningrad Region, in the south - with Pavlovsky District of St. Petersburg, Gatchinsky District and Tosnensky District of Leningrad Region. The territory encompasses over 10 historic localities and settlements: the town of Pushkin, the settlement of Shushary and Alexandrovskaya, Moskovskaya Slavyanka, Kandakopshino, Novokandakopshino, Novoselki, Gummolosary, Belozerka, Pavlovsk-2 and a number of others. The area totals 200.9 square kilometres (most of which are free land and arable lands) with a population of 99,000 inhabitants in 2003. The district contains three municipal formations: the town of Pushkin, Alexandrovskaya and the settlement of Shushary. The development of the district territory began in the early 18th century along with the emerging of the palace and park ensemble in Tsarskoe Selo. The construction of Russia's first Tsarskoselskaya Railway in 1837 immensely contributed to the development of district's infrastructure. In the 1960s the district saw intensive residential development, state farm settlements were built up with multi-storey apartment buildings. The territory is intersected by two thruways of the international significance: М-10 (Russia route) and М-20 (Kievskoe Highway). Shushary, Parovozny Muzey, 21st Kilometer, Detskoe Selo stations are located along the railway line of Vitebsky Railway Station; the line of Baltiysky Railway Station contains Alexandrovskaya and Kandakopshino stations. The district also accommodates industrial enterprises such as the Guilette Plant, the Coca-Cola Plant, the Pushkinsky Carbuilding Plant, the Tsarskoselsky Sofia Plant, and the Architectural Glass Plant. A large terminal storage complex is located in Shushary. The agricultural sector is represented by the Shushary, Lensovetovsky, and Detskoselsky agro-industrial enterprises, and the Lesnoe Cattle Breeding Farm. The district also accommodates Leningrad Region State University, Lenin Higher Naval School, the Savitsky Higher School of Air Defence Radioelectronics, and the Turner Children's Orthopaedic Institute.
