ABRAMOV Fedor Alexanderovich (1920-1983, Leningrad), writer, essayist. He lived in Leningrad from 1938. He participated in the Great Patriotic War of 1941-45, was heavily wounded in the battle for Leningrad. He graduated from Philological Faculty of Leningrad State University (1948), where he taught in 1953-60, and was a Head of the Modern Literature Department in 1956-60. He was a bright representative of the so called rural prose, represented in his works The Pryaslin trilogy, or Brothers and Sisters, after the name of the first novel, published in 1958 in the Neva journal (the three novels were awarded the State Prize of the USSR, 1975), and other works. In his essays and articles Abramov acutely discussed problems and perspectives of the Russian country side (Round About, 1963, What do we live and feed on?.., 1979, etc.), which had a strong public resonance. Plays written to Abramov's novels Brothers and Sisters and The House, in the Leningrad Regional Small Drama Theatre (1985, director L.A. Dodin; State Prize of the USSR, 1986, together with two other plays) were notable events in Leningrad theatrical scene. He lived in one of the Leningrad State University buildings (7/9 Universitetskaya Embankment); in 1970-82, at 58 Third Line of Vasilievsky Island; in 1982-83, at 1 Michurinskaya Street (memorial plaque).
