Categories / Literature. Book Publishing/Personalia

Sluchevsky Konstantin Konstantinovich (1837, St. Petersburg - 1904) poet, staff master. Graduated from the First Cadet Corps in St. Petersburg (1855); he served in the Semenovsky Lifeguard Regiment, resigned in 1860. He studied philosophy and natural sciences abroad; he received a Ph. D. in philosophy at the University of Heidelberg (1866). He served at the Main Administration for Affairs of Press (until 1874), at the Ministry of State Properties. In 1891-1902, he was editor of the newspaper Pravitelstvenny Vestnik. He was a member of the Council of Ministers for Home Affairs, of the Educational Committee of the Ministry of People's Enlightment. Literary popularity came to Sluchevsky only after the publication of a collection of works in 1898 and of the concluding collections of poems Songs from the Corner (1902). Sluchevsky was considered to be one of the direct forerunners to the symbolists. The Petersburg theme takes a relatively modest place in the poems by Sluchevsky (The Wind Moves Contrarily..., Morning over the Neva and several other poems). He published a series of brochures Facts of the Russian Life under the Criticism of Aesthetics (issues 1-3, 1866-67). He lived at 7 Nikolaevskaya Street (today Marata Street); at 28 Malaya Italyanskaya Street (today Zhukovskogo Street); at 127 Fontanka River Embankment. In 1898-1904, literary Fridays were arranged at the flat of Sluchevsky - successors of Fridays of Y. P. Polonsky. He died at his estate in Ust-Narva. He was buried in Novodevichye cemetery.
