PLAVILSHIKOV PUBLISHING HOUSE, established in 1794 by Vasily Alexeevich Plavischikov (1768-1823) on the basis of I. Krylov and Co publishing house accommodated in I.I. Betskoy's house at 1 Millionnaya Street. After private printing houses had been banned in 1796, the publishing house functioned as the printing house attached to St. Petersburg Provincial Administration. In 1804-07 it worked under the management of the Theatre Printing House, to resume its own brand in 1807-23. The publishing house issued over 300 titles of Russian and foreign books and periodicals. In 1813 Plavilschikov opened a book shop near the Imperial Public Library at 18 Sadovaya Street; two years later the shop moved to 70 Moika River Embankment. The shop soon gained a wide popularity as a place for meetings among St. Petersburg men of letters. It also hosted the best commercial library in St. Petersburg. On the death of Plavilschikov his business passed into the hands of his salesman A.F. Smirdin.
