INSTITUTE OF HISTORY, PHILOSOPHY, AND LINGUISTICS, Leningrad, founded in 1930/31 as the History and Linguistics Institute on the basis of a history and linguistics department separated from the Leningrad State University. After a philosophy department was established in 1933 the institute was renamed as the Leningrad Institute of History, Philosophy, and Linguistics. It was situated at 11 Universitetskaya Embankment. The departments of history and literature, local lore, and editing and publishing were reorganised into four departments in 1934. These were departments of linguistics, literature, history, and philosophy. The institute became one of the major centres for the study of national history and the higher education in history in the first half of 1930s. It was the first Soviet institution to establish a chair in classical philology. It also had independent chairs for folklore and history of West-European literature. Among its staff were I. M. Grevs, B. D. Grekov, V. F. Shishmarev, V. M. Zhirmunsky and M. P. Alexeev worked at the institute. In 1936/37, the departments of philosophy and history were united with the history department of the Leningrad State University, which was reestablished in 1934. Based on the other two departments of the institute, a philosophy department of the Leningrad State University was established.
