Grenadier's Bridge

Categories / Architecture/Bridges

GRENADIER'S BRIDGE (formerly Sampsonievsky), across the Bolshaya Nevka, joining Chapaeva Street and Petrogradskaya Embankment (on the left, the bank of the Bolshaya Nevka) with Grenadierskaya Street and Vyborgskaya Embankment. The name is derived from the neighbouring barracks of the regiment belonging to the Grenadier Lifeguards. A pontoon bridge was built from 1758 near Bolshaya Vulfovaya (currently Chapaeva) Street and Maly Sampsonievsky Avenue, by 1806 it was taken up river to the place of Sampsonievsky Bridge, and a ferry took its place. In 1904-05, in the old position a wooden beam pile A-framed bridge was built in twelve spans (among them one span opened in two parts). In 1951, a metal span bridge was installed and a metal framed rigging for the floating part of the abutment (engineer V.V. Blazhevich). In 1971-75, 90 metres downstream a new three span bridge was built (engineers B.B. Levin, Y.L. Yurkov, V.V. Demchenko, architects P.A. Areshev, L.A.Noskov). The central span opened with one wing, using a single fixed axle with one rotation; lateral blocks with reinforced metal girders; the abutments are of reinforced concrete, faced with granite. On the right bank is the transport tunnel. On the left bank Aptekarsky Bridge is joined to Grenadier's Bridge across the Karpovka River, forming a square before the bridges. Length: 218.8 metres, width: 27.0 metres.
