OTT INSTITUTE OF OBSTETRICS AND GYNAECOLOGY, a research institute situated at 3 Mendeleevskaya Street. It was founded in 1797 on the initiative of Empress Maria Fedorovna as the Midwifery Institute named the Imperial Midwifery Institute from 1828. Situated at 148 Fontanka River Embankment, the institute included a 20-bed imperial maternity department and a 22-student midwifery school. It became the first scientific and medical institution to provide advanced medical training in 1828. It was transferred to a special building constructed by architect L. N. Benois at the present-day address in 1904, a commemorative plaque is attached to the building in honour of the foundation. The building accommodated the Tenth International Convention of Obstetrician-Gynecologists in 1910, which recognised the Midwifery Institute as the best in its sphere. Placed under the control of the People's Commissariat for State Care in 1918, it was renamed the Institute and Palace of Maternity. It was attached to the Academy of Medical Sciences and received its present-day name in 1948. The institute performs scientific, medical, and educational functions. It has a 325-bed clinic. Its major activities include women's health care during pregnancy, delivery, and postnatal, miscarriage prevention and treatment, research on environmental influences, and prenatal diagnosis of hereditary diseases. It is in the institute that a test-tube baby was born first in the city and second in the country in 1986. The International Centre of Reproductive Medicine has been operating in the institute since 1989. Among members working at the institute were the first Russian Professor of Obstetrics N. M. Maximovich-Ambodik, I. F. Balandin, D. O. Ott whose name was given to the institute in 1989 with a monument installed inside the building, as well as V. G. Baranov, S. M. Becker, R. N. Kiparsky, M. A. Petrov-Maslakov, et al.
