It was founded in 1918 for management of nationalised city power stations and was called OGES, then was renamed Petrotok trust, and since 1932 the company has been known as Lenenergo. By 1940 it consisted of 20 companies, including 9 power stations (with power production capacity of over 3 billion kW/h). During the Siege of 1941-44 all suburb power stations were destroyed, and city power stations, electric and heating nets were heavily damaged, however already in 1944 the pre-war levels of electric and heating power were reached. From 1950 to 1980 nine new power stations were built, the cable network and aerial power lines were renovated. In 1993 Lenenergo was transformed into an open joint-stock company (49% of shares belonged to RAO UES of Russia, 27.17% - to foreign investors). Lenenergo supplies about 100% of electricity and about 54% of heat (2003) to the region, and operates 14 power stations (8 TPP stations, 2 HPP stations and 4 hydroelectric complexes) with total power capacity of 5352,5 MW and a developed net of power lines (53.6 thousand km long). Lenenergo has 36 structural units, and employs 17,400 workers. The company office is located in the former barracks building of the Pavlovsky Life Guard Regiment. References: Герасимов В. Н.
