The Chesme Column

The decisive naval battle took place in the Chesme Bay (Aegean Sea) in June 1770. “All honor to the Russian fleet! On the 25th-26th we attacked, defeated, crashed, burnt, sank and turned to ashes the enemy’s fleet and became the rulers of the archipelago” (an extract from the report of Admiral G. Spiridonov).
The Chesme Column is the most magnificent monument of Russian military glory expressing the sea power of Russia. It was designed by architect Antonio Rinaldi. The pedestal is decorated with bas-reliefs illustrating the three decisive naval battles of the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774: the Battle of Chesme, the Battle of Chios and occupation of the Mytilini Island by marine corps.
It was constructed on the Large Pond of the Catherine Park.
