PALLADY (born Pavel Ivanovich Raev-Pisarev) (1827-1898, St. Petersburg), religious figure, Honorary Member of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (1894). After graduating from Kazan Theological Academy (1852), he taught at Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary. In 1861, he took monastic vows under the name of Pallady, and was appointed Director of Nizhny Novgorod Theological Seminary. In 1862, he was ordained Archimandrite. He was assigned to serve as Director of St. Petersburg Theological Seminary in 1863, to become its president the following year, as well as becoming a member of St. Petersburg Ecclesiastical Consistory, and deputy of the Chief Curator for Religious Teaching at Secular Educational Institutions and member of the conference of St. Petersburg Ecclesiastical Academy. In 1866 Pallady became Bishop of Ladoga and Vicar of St. Petersburg Eparchy. He chaired the Committee for the Welfare of Eparchy clergy and of the Commission of Diocesan Communities of Sisters of Mercy. In 1869, Pallady was made Bishop of Vologda, then appointed Bishop of Tambov in 1873, Bishop of Ryazan in 1876, Archbishop of Kazan in 1882, Exarch of Georgia and Archbishop of Kartaly and Kakhetia in 1887. In 1892, he became Metropolitan of St. Petersburg and Ladoga, Prior of Alexander Nevsky Lavra, and the Presiding Member of the Holy Synod. Pallady took part in coronation ceremonies of Alexander III (1883) and Nicholas II (1896). He was buried at St. Isidor Church of Alexander Nevsky Lavra. In 1932, his remains were taken to Nikolskoe cemetery, where a cross was placed on his grave in 1988.
