FRIDMAN Alexander Alexandrovich (1888, St. Petersburg - 1925, Leningrad), mathematician and physicist. Holder of a master's degree (1922). Graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of St. Petersburg University (1910). Lectured in the Institute of Transport Communications Engineers (1910-14) and Mining Institute (1912-14). In 1914, Fridman volunteered to serve in an air force detachment, flew planes and carried out air reconnaissance. In 1920, returned to Petrograd. Held a professorship in Polytechnic Institute (1920-25) and the Institute of Transport Communications Engineers (1920-25). Worked as a research assistant of the Atomic Energy Commission of State Optic Institute (1920-24). In 1920, Fridman was appointed research assistant of the Main Physical (Geophysical) Observatory, took up the post of director in February 1925. Took part in stratosphere flights in 1924. His main area of research was in the field of hydrodynamics, meteorology and relativistic cosmology. Fridman authored the model of expanding universe. In 1931, he was awarded the Lenin Prize posthumously. Buried at Smolenskoe Orthodox Cemetery.
