Pulkovskiye Heights

Categories / City Topography/Geographical Objects/Hills and Heights

PULKOVSKIYE HEIGHTS, a natural prominence to the south of St. Petersburg, which received its name from the village of Pulkovo that once existed in the vicinity. Pulkovskiye Heights are glacial hills overlaying the Baltic-Ladoga escarpment with a height of 75.4 meters around Pulkovo Observatory (opened in 1839) and 66.9 meters in the tract of Tolmachi. The foot of the Pulkovskiye Heights is elevated to 23.5 - 25 meters above sea level which is the reason why the relative height is as great as 42-50 meters. Southwards from the Pulkovskiye Heights the height above sea level equals 50-55 meters which makes the point only 20 meters high. The heights overlook the Neva Lowland revealing a fantastic panorama of St. Petersburg. In the course of the Civil and Great Patriotic Wars the Pulkovskiye Heights saw fierce fighting.
