KAMENKA, a river in the south-west of St. Petersburg, running from Shuvalovo and Kamenka. It flows from Lake Nizhnee Bolshoe Suzdalskoe and runs through Novo-Orlovsky Forest Park and the pond of Shuvalovsky Pit. Near the village of Kamenka, the river converges with Chernaya Rechka River, then runs across Yuntolovo Natural Reserve (see Yuntolovo Forest Estate) and finally flows into Lakhtinsky Razliv Lake of the Neva Bay. The river is 12 kilometres long, with the width in the lower reaches of 50-60 metres and the depth approaching two metres. The average flow rate is 0.3 cubic metres per second. The river flows in a meandering course in the upper and middle reaches, with the river-bed stony in some areas, especially when the river crosses ancient Novoselki-Kamenskaya river-side spit (hence the river's name, kamen is Russian for stone). The lower course of the river is absorbed in marshland and forest. The water in the river is comparatively clean, while the area surrounding the Kamenka constitutes a recreation zone and is under threat of residential construction.
