Utka, river

Categories / City Topography/Waterways and Currents/Rivers

UTKA, a river southeast of Saint Petersburg, feeds into the Neva River from the right, meeting it near Heating Station No. 5. Named after manufacturer Utkin, which dates back to the 19th century. It flows from the swamp basin southwest of the Koltushi Hills. Its length totals 6,5 kilometers (within Saint Petersburg boundaries - less than 2 kilometers), and its width in the lower section reaches about 20 meters. Its upper parts have been improved and developed. A 50-meter closing dyke in the middle of the river forms a pond channeling water south to the Novo-Saratovka settlement. From the left, near Prinevsky (Krasny Oktyabr) settlement, the Utka River meets a 4-kilometer stream flowing toward a lake east of Novo-Saratovka. The river is used to supply water. The river banks accommodate horticultural plantations and industrial facilities. The Rusanovsky Bridge spans the Utka River at the Oktyabrskaya Embankment. See also Utkina Zavod.
