Chernavka, river

Categories / City Topography/Waterways and Currents/Rivers

CHERNAVKA, a river in the east of St. Petersburg, a tributary to the Okhta River. The length is about two kilometres; width in its lower course is up to 12 metres. The name was caused by the dark colour of the water. The river rises from swamps on the site of the present-day Park named after the Fiftieth Anniversary of the October Revolution and ran through the unpopulated region and Bolsheoktinskoe cemetery. In the 19th century, the upper reaches (the area of present-day Energetikov Avenue, Marshala Tukhachevskogo Street and Bolshaya Porokhovskaya Street) were filled in during territorial development; in the 20th century, the lower and almost the entire middle course were similarly filled in, now making up the area of present-day Metallistov Avenue and Yakornaya Street. A small part of the river-bed has been preserved on Bolsheokhtinskoe cemetery.
