Kolomensky Island

KOLOMENSKY ISLAND, historical name of the area between the Moika River, Kryukov Canal, Griboedova Canal, Fontanka River, Bolshaya Neva River, and Pryazhka River. Its area is over 90 hectares. It was a part of Pervushin Island that also included Kolomensky Island, Pokrovsky Island, and Spassky Island until the early 18th century. The present-day name, originating from the district of Kolomna, entered common usage in the 19th century. After branches of the Fontanka River and Pryazhka River were partly filled up in 1860s, Kolomensky Island included Galerny Island and Salny Buyan Island. A part between Griboedova Canal and the Fontanka River is called Pokrovsky Island.
