Kotlin, Island

Categories / City Topography/Geographical Objects/Islands

KOTLIN, is an island in the east of the Neva Bay, in the Gulf of Finland. It is 23 kilometres west of Vasilievsky Island, 12 kilometres southwest of Gorskaya, and six kilometres north of Lomonosov. It is 16 square kilometres in area, 11 kilometres long, and two kilometres wide. As it is a terminal glacial moraine, the island is often flooded in the west. The east is higher as ground was artificially added to raise it. The island was called Kolingen, Kattila, and Retusaari until the early 18th century. Kronstadt Fortress was built in the island from 1703 and the base of the Baltic Fleet was erected later. There are over 30 islands surrounding Kotlin Island including 23 artificial islands: foundations of piers and former forts. Kronstadt is located on the island. Kotlin has been the centre of building flood barriers since 1970s. A car road between Kronstadt and Gorskaya was opened in the north of the dam in 1985.
