GRAZHDANKA, an area to the north of St. Petersburg. Named after a German settlement (sometimes, referred to as Gorozhanka) that was formed in the second half of the 18th century on Staraya Murinskaya Road (the present-day site of Favorskogo Street), at that time Russkaya Grazhdanka settlement appeared in the neighbourhood. The territory of Grazhdanka is divided with Murinsky Stream. In 1887, Staraya Murinskaya road was renamed the road to Grazhdanka; the modern name, Grazhdansky Avenue, was fixed in 1962. In 1941-45, Grazhdanka Military Aerodrome was based in this region (the memorial sign was mounted on the starting place of its takeoff runway by building 25 on Nauki Avenue). In the 1960s, large scale residential building was undertaken and it became one of the largest residential areas in the city with a population of over 100,000 people arose. In the south part of Grazhdanka, Vedeneev Hydraulic Engineering Scientific Research Institute and Hypronickel Scientific Research Institute are situated along Grazhdansky Avenue. On the territory of Grazhdanka, there is the first in the country children and youth football school, Smena, and the Zenit Palace of Sport. By the intersection of Grazhdansky Avenue and Nauki Avenue, Akademicheskaya metro station (1975) and large shopping and recreation centres are located.
