RZHEVKA, an area in the north-east of St. Petersburg, on the left bank of the Okhta River, to the north-east of Porokhovye. Since the 1730s, the Rzhevskaya Settlement, owned by Captain V.F. Rzhevsky (hence the name), was located there. In the middle of the 19th century, the Rzhevsky Sea Test Range was founded, there artillery-type weapons produced at Obukhovsky Steel Works were tested. Smolnoe Military Airfield (later Rzhevka Airport) was constructed to the east of Rzhevka at the beginning of the Great Patriotic War (in the autumn of 1941); it played an important role in the life support of the city during the Siege. On the territory of Rzhevka there is the Krasnoznamenets Plant, the Metal Structure Plant, a Concrete-mixing Plant, a Bread-baking Plant, and a Military Medicine Scientific Research Institute. In the 1910s, the housing development was fragmentary and mainly housed workers of the powder-mill; in the 1940-50s they became individual residential houses and in the 1930-70s separate blocks of standard buildings. In 2001, the construction of the east semi-ring of the encircling highway was launched close to Rzhevka Railway Station. Rzhevka toponym has been preserved in the names of the railway station, Rzhevskaya Square and Rzhevskaya Street; it also refers to the industrial zone between Revolyutsii Freeway, junction railway line and Vsevolozhsk Railway Line. Other enterprises are located on the territory of Rzhevka, Khimvolokno Scientific Research Institute, Elektropult Plant, Nec-Neva Plant, Laminated Plastic Plant, Santekh Plant, and Piskarevsky Dairy Plant. An integrated telecommunications research programme has been created on the basis of Rzhevka industrial zone and technology park.
