MALAYA OKHTA, a locality in the eastern part of St. Petersburg, situated on the left bank of the Neva River, above the mouth of the Okhta River. It borders on Soedinitelnaya Railway Line in the north and the Okkervil River in the north-east, adjoining Pravy Bereg Nevy District in the south. The development of the territory started after Okhta Shipyard was laid on the site of the Swedish fortress Nyenskans in 1721; a settlement of workers soon sprang up around the shipyard. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries Malaya Okhta was a working-class suburb of St. Petersburg. In 1911, Petra Velikogo Bridge (see Bolsheokhtinsky Bridge) was inaugurated here, which linked Malaya Okhta with the centre of St. Petersburg. In 1922, Malaya Okhta was included within the official borders of the city. In the 1920s-30s the southern part of the area running along the embankment of the Neva was built over and reconstructed. In the1950s the ensemble of Zanevskaya Square, the planning focal point of Malaya Okhta, took definite shape. In the following decade Novocherkassky Avenue, Zanevsky Avenue and Shaumyana Avenue were built up with standard houses. Alexandra Nevskogo Bridge, opened in 1965, established a direct connection between Malaya Okhta and Nevsky Prospect. Novocherkasskaya Metro Station was put into operation in 1985. In 1996-2001 the Holy Assumption Church (Leningrad Siege Memorial Church) was erected.
