BRYULLOV Alexander Pavlovich (1798 - 1877, St. Petersburg), architect, aquarellist, architecture theorist, specialist in construction technique. Brother of K. P. Bryullov. Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts (1821), served as the architect of the Imperial Court (from 1830). He was a member of Committee for Buildings and Hydraulic works. He taught at the Academy of Fine Arts (1831-71, from 1830, an Academy member; from 1831, professor; from 1854, professor emeritus and member of the Academy Council). He was a founding member of St. Petersburg Society of Architects. His works belong to the transitional period from Neoclassicism to Eclecticism. His works in St. Petersburg include: Мikhailovsky Theatre (1831-1833, currently, the M.P. Mussorgsky Opera and Ballet Theatre), the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, the building of the Staff of Guards' Corps. Bryullov is one of the authors of the project of reconstruction and design of the interiors of the Winter Palace following the 1837 fire (Malachite and Alexander's halls, 1837-39). He is the author of the Blagoveshchensky Brigde design (see Lieutenant Schmidt Bridge). He created watercolours, views of St. Petersburg for the Anthology of views of St. Petersburg and its outskirts edited by the Society for the Encouragement of Arts (some were lithographed in 1821-22). In the suburbs, he erected the church in Pargolovo (1831); Pulkovo Observatory; his private summer residence in Pavlovsk (1837). Bryullov owned the apartment houses at 21 Kadetskaya (now Siezdovskaya) Line, and at current 25 Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment; he lived in the professor's lodge at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was buried at Pavlovsk Municipal Cemetery.
