MIKESHIN Mikhail Osipovich (1835-1896, St. Petersburg), painter, graphic artist, sculptor. Studied at the Academy of Arts (1851-58), became a member in 1869. Won a competition in 1859 for the monument for the Millennium of Russia in Novgorod the Great (opened in 1862). In 1861-73 he worked on the monument to Catherine II in St. Petersburg. Mikeshin's workshop was located in the building of the Academy of Arts. He made decorative sculptures for ships (among them the Livadia yacht), and developed several monuments in Russia and abroad (among the completed ones are a monument to Admiral Greig in Nikolaev (1873) and to B. Khmelnitsky in Kiev (opened in 1888). Sculptures on Mikeshin's monuments were made by such sculptors as M.A. Chizhov and A.M. Opekushin. He was buried at Nikolskoe Cemetery, his gravestone made by his son B.M. Mikeshin.
