SCHRETER Viktor Alexandrovich (1839-1901), architect, lecturer, representative of the transitional rationalistic style from Eclecticism to Art Nouveau. In 1856-58, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in the class of L.L. Bonstedt, in 1858-61, at the Berlin Urban Planning Academy. In 1864, was conferred the title of associate academy member, in 1892, of professor of the Academy of Fine Arts. From 1872, he was the editor of Zodchy magazine, founder of the Architects’ Society. From 1865 lectured in the Institute of Civil engineering. From 1882, was appointed Chief Architect for Imperial Theatres. Specialist in the sphere of entertainment facilities construction with the application of the latest techniques, building the extension of the Mariinsky Theatre, Nemetti Summer Theatre (has not survived), decoration shops and warehouses at 20 Bolshaya Podyacheskaya Street and 20 Pisareva Street. Drew up a project for a grand theatre on the Field of Mars, which was never completed. Schreter is considered a master of brick style, building the factory and house of A. Nissen (183 Fontanka River Embankment), the houses of V. Strauss (9 Second Line of Vasilievsky Island), А. Meyer (66 Marata Street), the mansion of his own (see the house of Schreter), the L. Nobel plant employees residential settlement (27-31 Bolshoy Sampsonievsky Avenue). Built the Birzhevaya Hospital complex (27 Bolshoy Avenue of Vasilievsky Island), wooden Lutheran Church of St. Mary (11 Sytninskaya Street, has not survived), the Russian Foreign Trade Bank building (32 Bolshaya Morskaya Street) and a great number of apartment houses. Paid due attention to the interior planning and constructions. Buried at the Smolenskoe Lutheran Cemetery.
