LAZAREVSKAYA BURIAL VAULT, St. Lazarus’ Church within the ensemble of Alexander Nevsky Lavra. A small stone church (so-called tent) was built in 1717 behind the altar of the Holy Annunciation Church for the burial of Natalia Alexeevna (in 1723, her ashes were transferred to stone Blagoveshchenskaya burial vault). In 1787-89, Lazarevskaya burial vault was extended, in 1835-36, completely reconstructed (architect L.Y. Tiblen), financed by Count D.N. Sheremetev (it was the family burial vault of the Sheremetev counts). In 1923, Lazarevskaya burial vault was conveyed to the Old Petersburg Society, since 1932, it was a part of the necropolis museum (see The Museum of City Sculpture); the iconostasis and inner paintings were demolished. In the 1930s, certain gravestones from the Church of Our Lady Fedorovskaya and the Descent of the Holy Spirit Church of the Lavra were transferred to Lazarevskaya burial vault. Currently, there are over 80 grave monuments and plaques at Lazarevskaya burial vault (over 30 of them were transferred from other necropolises). Among the buried are the former-peasant actress P.I. Kovaleva-Zhemchugova (married, Countess Sheremeteva), her husband, Count N.P. Sheremetyev, I.A. Gannibal (grand-uncle of Alexander Pushkin), Conference Secretary of St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences G.N. Teplov, General P.I. Melissino (gravestone - 1800, sculptor M.I. Kozlovsky), musician M.Y. Vielgorsky (see the Vielgorsky family), statesmen A.S. Shishkov, V.P. Kochubey, D.V. Dashkov, L.A. Petrovsky (gravestone - 1857, architect M.A. Shchurupov).
