Saints of the St. Petersburg Eparchy (general article)

SAINTS OF THE ST. PETERSBURG EPARCHY, saints who lived on the territory of the Eparchy and were glorified by the Russian Orthodox Church. St. Prince Alexander Nevsky whose relics rest in Alexander Nevsky Lavra is a patron of the region and the city. In the 13th century, when the region belonged to Novgorod, there lived the Venerable Anthony Dymsky, founder of Anthonievo-Dymsky Monastery in the outskirts of Tikhvin. St. Arseny Konevsky lived on the island of Konevets in the 15th century. He was buried in Konevetsky Monastery founded by him. In 1533, the Venerable Alexander of Svir, the founder of Alexander-Svirsky Monastery, died. His parents the Venerable Sergius and Varvara were also canonized. The Venerable Martiry Zelenetsky, Kornily Padansky, Kiprian Storozhensky, Makary Rymlyanin and Trifon Gorodetsky who lived in the 16th century were canonized for their monastic achievements. At the end of the 20th century, Xenia the Blessed, John of Kronstadt, Venerable Seraphim of Vyritsa, and also several new martyrs (including the former emperor Nicholas II and members of his family) were glorified. In 2000, the Day of Remembrance for St. Petersburg Saints was fixed on the third Sunday after the Day of the Holy Trinity. Icons of all the new saints were painted, and acathistuses were written in honour of many saints. Orthodox residents of St. Petersburg also worship devotees of the 19th -20th centuries: Blessed Anna (Lozhkina), Hermit Matfy (Totamir), Wanderer Alexander (Kraynev), Nun Matryenushka the Barefoot, the nun in Schema Maria of Gatchina, Blessed Lyubushka Susaninskaya, Metropolitan Ioann (Snychev).
