Yanyshev I.L. (1826-1910), Court Archpresbyter

YANYSHEV Ioann Leontevich (1826-1910, St. Petersburg), religious and public figure, preacher, Doctor of Theology (1899). Graduated from St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1849. In 1851, he was ordained into the priesthood and assigned as a priest to an Orthodox Church in Wiesbaden (Germany). In 1856, he joined the staff of St. Petersburg University as a lecturer of Theology and Philosophy, two years later he became a priest of the Russian Church in Berlin, and in 1859 he was sent to Wiesbaden again. In 1864, he taught religion to Danish Princess Dagmara (the future Empress Maria Fedorovna). In 1866-83, he held the post of the Rector of St. Petersburg Theological Academy, and in 1875 he initiated the publishing of the Tserkovny Vestnik magazine. In 1883, he became the confessor of Imperial Family, and headed the court clergy serving as Archpresbyter of the Holy Face Cathedral in the Winter Palace. He was involved in conferences and congresses of Old Catholics, and advocated the unity of Christian Churches. In addition, he was also one of the founders of St. Petersburg House for the Care of Widows, Orphans And Retired Court Clergy. He lived at 22 Voskresenskaya Embankment (present-day Robespierre Embankment). He was buried at Volkovskoe Orthodox cemetery.
