CHURCH OF ST. NICHOLAS OF MYRA, located on the corner of Second Sovetskaya Street and Bakunina Avenue. It was constructed in 1913-15 in the Novgorod-Pskov style (architect S. S. Krichinsky). The church had originally belonged to the Imperial Palestinian Community, and boasted a rich stylized decor. Archaeologist V. T. Georgievsky was consulted during construction. The cross-shaped, single-domed building with a green glazed tiled belfry held over 300 people. On the outside it was decorated with carved ornaments and white stone crosses, inside it was decorated with paintings in the style of Dionysius frescoes (artists V. A. Plotnikov and V. S. Shcherbakov). The four-tier iconostasis included precious icons from the 16th and 17th centuries from the collection of the former chief procurator of the Holy Synod, Prince A. A. Shirinsky-Shikhmatov, and the 16th century royal gates. The chamber hall, painted in the style of 17th century Moscow tower chambers, was established under the church. The Icon of Our Lady Quick to Hearken was especially revered (today the icon is kept in the Holy Trinity Cathedral of Alexander Nevsky Lavra). In 1932, the church was closed down and demolished.
