HOLY VIRGIN INTERCESSION CHURCH, (Turgeneva Square), constructed on parish donations in Bolshaya Kolomna in 1798-1812 in the style of high Classicism (architect I. E. Starov). The main building of the church was crowned with a high lantern drum with a cupola and a dome; the two-tier bell tower with a spire adjoined the refectory. The main three-tier Empire style iconostasis was carved by Okhta engravers V. T. Shnyrev and S. Volkov, icons were painted by E. V. Moshkov and P. V. Moshkov and S. V. Kostin, and paintings were done by G. P. Zinovyev. Alexander Pushkin and his parents who lived nearby attended this church; the poet mentioned the church in his poem The Little House in Kolomna. Two chapels designed by architect V. P. Stasov were built in 1814-16; the side-altars were reconstructed in 1848-50 according to the project by architects V. F. Nebolsin and A. I. Shevtsov. In 1892-1902, the church was extended according to the project by civil engineer S. P. Kovrigin. The extended church could hold 1,000 people. In 1871, the church organized a charitable society that kept a hospice, two orphanages, a parish school and a children’s sanatorium near Siverskaya. In 1932, the church was closed down; and in 1934, was demolished. In 2000 a memorial stone stele was mounted in its place, made according to the designs of architect M. I. Skryplev. From the Holy Virgin Intercession Church (Pokrovskaya Church) come the former name of Turgeneva Square, Pokrovskaya Square, and the name of Pokrovsky Island.
