LATVIAN CHURCH OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR, located at 62 Zagorodny Avenue, was intended for the Latvian Lutheran community of St. Petersburg, which numbered about 4,000 people in the mid-19th century. The Neo-Romanesque church was built in 1847-49 by architect V.E. Morgan on money contributed by Emperor Nicholas I and the parish. Permission for construction was obtained in 1845 after the petition of General I.A. Vietinghof. The church could accommodate 400 people. The facade of the elongated building had two rows of Romanesque windows and was divided into sections with vertical and horizontal string cornices. In 1864-65, architect N.L. Benois extended the church and erected a belfry over the entrance. The neighbouring apartment house belonging to the church (1881-82, architect V.A. Schreter) accommodated an almshouse, several orphanages, cheap flats and two commercial schools. In 1938, the church was closed and dismantled; today a public garden has been laid out on its site.
