ALL-RUSSIAN OIL AND GEOLOGICAL SURVEY INSTITUTE of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation and the Academy of Sciences situated at 39 Liteiny Avenue, the oldest national research centre of oil geology separated from the Geological Committee in 1929. It consisted of 14 research departments in 2003 including Timano-Pechorsky Research Centre in the town of Ukhta, as well as analytical and information services, a scientific and technical library, and special geological assets. Its main research areas include nature of oil, gas, and condensates, principles for the formation and location of oil and gas fields, and forecasting those locations and conducting geological and economic evaluation of oil-and-gas resources on both a local and the national scale. Based on the works of the institute, detailed regional databases were compiled containing information on reserves and structure of oil and gas. The institute explored and developed the so-called Second Baku in Tatarstan and Bashkiria, West Siberian Oil and Gas Province, Timano-Pechorsky Region, Caspian Sea Region, etc. Members of the academy and geologists worked at the institute at various times including V. D. Nalivkin, N. B. Vassoevich, M. F. Dvali, K. P. Kalitsky, N. A. Kydryavtsev, et al. The institute has been publishing Proceedings since 1930. It is situated in the former Pashkov's House.
