INSTITUTE OF NORTHERN PEOPLES, an educational research institution. It separated from the Northern Department of the Leningrad Oriental Institute in December 1929, which was founded in 1927 on the basis of the Northern Department of the Workers’ Faculty of the Leningrad State University established in 1925. It was situated at 17 Obvodny Canal Embankment. The educational part of the institute included the following departments until1939: a training department, a technical school including departments for teachers' training, Soviet Party, and fishery economics, as well as a North Asian Seminar that provided higher education for teachers in a native language of the region, the Russian language, and literature. The training was arranged similarly at a school level and in the Pedagogical Institute from 1939, the former providing undergraduate education. The institute numbered about 400 students, representatives of 24 nationalities from the far north, providing them with complete social security. The research part of the institute, also known as the research association, took part in creating in recording the spoken languages of northern peoples, developed textbooks, and published News in 1935-36, Proceedings in 1932-33, and a journal, Taiga and Tundra, in 1928-33. The institute also provided post-graduate studies, with the first class graduating in 1934. The institute was closed in October 1941 succeeded by the department of Northern peoples, part of the Leningrad State University in 1949-53, later transferred to the Herzen Teachers' Training Institute.
