HISTORICAL SOCIETY of St. Petersburg University founded in 1889 on the initiative of Professor N. I. Kareev, who became its permanent chairman. The society had its meetings at the Faculty of History and Philology. It consisted of over 160 people in 1890, over 270 in 1895, and over 180 in 1915, historians of St. Petersburg, Moscow, Kiev, etc. took part in its activities including A. S. Lappo-Danilevsky, V. I. Semevsky, I. V. Luchitsky, N. P. Pavlov-Silvansky, E. V. Tarle, and B. D. Grekov. In 1903, the society was joined by the department of general history with I. M. Grevs holding the chair and the department of Russian history with Lappo-Danilevsky holding the chair. Members of the society paid special attention to the theory of historical science. The student disorders of the late 1890s, followed by the dismissals of Kareev and a number of other professors from the university in 1899, and the events of 1905-07 were used by the authorities to impose restrictions on the activities of the society, which suffered a decline in those years. The society resumed active work after 1907, although its meetings were held in private. The society published 21 volumes of a nonperiodical History Review between 1890 and 1916. It was dissolved after October 1917.
