RUSSIAN GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY, founded in 1897 on the initiative of Prince A. B. Lobanov-Rostovsky in order to study the history of noble families, as well as conduct research in heraldry, ancient institutions and their legal documents, and other secondary historical disciplines. It held its meetings at 27 Nadezhdinskaya Street (today, Mayakovskogo Street) with Grand Duke Georgy Mikhailovich as the chairman. The society had historians, dignitaries, statesmen, and representatives of noble assemblies among its members including N. P. Likhachev, a founding member and the actual leader of the society, Count S. D. Sheremetev, G. A. Vlasyev, D. F. Kobeko, N. V. Myatlev and V. V. Rummel. The society collected and kept genealogical documents, its archives containing ancient patents, scrolls, documents dated between the 16th and 18th centuries from the archives of the Osorgin Family, Tyrtov Family, Musin-Pushkin Family, etc. It published four issues of News in 1900-11 and prepared family signatures of the 17th century for publication. After joining the Russian State Academy for the History of Material Culture in 1919, the society was renamed as the Russian Historical Genealogical Society and involved in social history. Dissolved in 1922, the society reappeared at 18 Sadovaya Street, St. Petersburg, in 1991 and resumed publishing its News in 1994.
