ARCHIVE OF CINEMA, PHOTOGRAPHY AND AUDIO DOCUMENTS, St. Petersburg (2 Muchnoy Lane) was founded in 1936 as Leningrad Regional Photo Archive, 1941-66 it was a part of the State Archive of the October Revolution and Leningrad Region Socialistic Building as a photo department, in 1966, it became Leningrad State Archive of Cinema, Photography and Audio Documents. In 1987 it became the Central Leningrad State Archive of Cinema, Photography and Audio Documents, and since 1991 it has been known by its present-day name. In 2002, it comprised over 520,000 negatives, positives, and albums (it temporarily does not collect cinema documents). The archive has photo materials, which appeared with the help of the institution’s activity, its organisations, the St. Petersburg (Leningrad) and Leningrad Region parties, as well as of state and political societies, prominent figures and scientists. The political history is represented by visual materials about the events of the revolutions of 1905-07 and 1917, the Civil War and WW II, pre-revolutionary economics of St. Petersburg and Russia, photos of plants and factories, banks, insurance societies, exchanges, shops, etc. A considerable number of photo documents are devoted to the construction and exploitation of railways, ports (including that of Petersburg), canals, state of the city transport and economy. On the photos one can see hospitals, shelters, etc. There are photo materials, which characterise life of nobles, bourgeoisie, clergy, clerks, workers and farmers, and inform about the activity of scientific, cultural and educational societies. In the archive there are photo portraits of members of the Imperial family, political and public figures, figures of culture, scientists. The work of the State authorities is reflected in photos of the Soviets assemblies and executive committees of different levels. Photo-reports register the Siege of 1941-44, functioning of the Road of Life, work of industrial enterprises. A considerable number of the photo materials is about St. Petersburg (Leningrad) economics, work of transport, medicine, education, sport and culture. Audio documents are represented by sound-recordings of different companies.
