ALEXANDROV Alexander Danilovich (1912-1999, St. Petersburg), mathematician, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1964). Graduated from the Physics Department of the Leningrad University in 1933. In 1933-64, worked at the Leningrad State University, served as chairman of the Geometry Department 1953-60, and as the university"s rector in 1953-64. In 1964-86, lived in Novosibirsk, returning to Leningrad in 1986 to work at the Mathematics Institute of the Academy of Sciences. One of the founders of the political club Leningrad Tribune during the Perestroika period. His major achievements are in the field of geometry, particularly as an author of geometry textbooks. As the rector of the Leningrad State University, Alexandrov advocated genetics, sociology and mathematical economics at a time when the fields were suppressed. Awarded the Stalin Prize in 1942. In 1952-64, Alexandrov lived at 7/1 Moika River Embankment. Buried at the Bogoslovskoe Cemetery.
