BEKETOV Andrey Nikolaevich (1825-1902), botanist, morphologist, Corresponding Member (1891) and Honorary Member (1895) of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences. Grandfather of A.A. Blok. Studied at the Oriental Languages Faculty of Petersburg University in 1841-42. In 1842-45, served in the military. Graduated from Kazan University in 1849. Lived in St. Petersburg from 1861. Worked as a professor at Petersburg University in 1863-97, became Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in 1870-76, and Elected Rector of the University in 1876-83. One of the organisers and heads of the Bestuzhev Courses. Beketov participated fully in the activities of the Russian Geographical Society, the Free Economic Society, and the Petersburg Naturalist Society at Petersburg University. In 1886, together with Ch.Y. Gobi, he founded the journal Botanicheskie Zapiski. His main research was devoted to the morphology and geography of plants, and to the study of flora. Founded the School of Russian Botanists. In 1876-83, Beketov lived in the so-called Rectors' Wing (9 Universitetskaya Embankment). Buried at Literatorskie Mostky.
