DEGTYAREV Vasily Alexeevich (1880-1949) was a small-arms designer, Doctor of Technology (1940), Major-General of Engineering and Artillery (1940), Hero of Socialist Labour (1940). In 1901-08, Degtyarev served in a small-arms shop of the School of Officers in Oranienbaum [Degtyarev lived at 18 Ilikovsky Avenue (today Volodarskogo Avenue); commemorative plaque]. In 1914-19 he worked at the Sestroretsk Arms Plant (1 Voskova Street, commemorative plaque). From 1919, Degtyarev lived and worked in the town of Kovrov. He led the first USSR Design Office for Rifle Design, creating the first Russian-made submachine-gun (PPD model), a number of models of machine guns, and an antitank gun. He was awarded Stalin Prizes in 1941, 1942, 1946, and 1949. A street in Bolshaya Okhta area was named after Degtyarev in 1952.
