LEVINSON-LESSING Franz Yulievich (1861-1939), petrographer, Member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1925). Graduated from the Faculty of Physics Mathematical of the University of St. Petersburg in 1883, and took up a teaching position there six years later. From 1892 to 1902, he worked as a professor at the University of Yuriev (present-day Tartu), transferring to the St. Petersburg (Leningrad) Polytechnical Institute in 1902-30. In 1921, he became a professor Chair of Petrography of the State Leningrad University. His major work is in the field of theoretical petrography, mineralogy and volcanology. Buried at Literatorskie Mostky. Levinson-Lessing lived at 1/2 Leytenanta Schmidta Embankment from 1929 to 1939 (memorial plaque installed).
