ROZHDESTVENSKY Dmitry Sergeevich (1876, St. Petersburg - 1940, Leningrad), physicist, member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1929). The husband of O.A. Dobiash-Rozhdestvenskaya. In 1900, he graduated from the University of St. Petersburg, where he worked from 1903 to 1932 and from 1938, appointed its professor in 1916. He also held the post of a counsellor for optical glass manufacture at the Porcelain Works. In 1918, he initiated the State Optical Institute, which he headed and where he held the post of the scientific director. From 1932 to 1938 he was active as the head of a department of the institute, to become its scientific consultant in 1938. His major works are dedicated to the research of anomalous dispersion of light, the theory of spectra and the theory of microscopy. He founded a scientific school of scholars in optics and was one of the initiators of the Russian optical industry. The Russian Academy of Sciences instituted the Rozhdestvensky Prize. He lived at 4 Birzhevaya Line from 1939 to 1940. Buried at Literatorskie Mostki. The building of the State Optical Institute, where Rozhdestvensky worked from 1918 to 1940 (12-14 Birzhevaya Line), bears a memorial plaque.
